Formula Student is an international engineering competition that challenges university students to design, build, and race their own single-seater race cars. It’s not just about speed—teams must create a car that’s fast, efficient, and reliable, all while keeping costs low. But it doesn’t stop there! Students also need to present a business plan on how their car could be mass-produced and sold in the real world.
This competition gives students the full experience of working in the automotive industry, from the initial sketches on paper to seeing their car race on the track. Teams are judged in both static events (such as design, cost analysis, and business presentation) and dynamic events (such as acceleration, endurance, and handling on the track).
The Challenge of Formula Student
Formula Student requires a blend of technical expertise and problem-solving. The team must balance performance with efficiency, ensuring the car can handle high speeds while consuming minimal energy. Every aspect of the car—engine, suspension, aerodynamics, and even safety—must be designed from scratch. It’s a hands-on learning experience that helps students understand what it takes to succeed in the competitive world of motorsports.

At Universitas Indonesia, UI Racing Team proudly embraces this challenge. Our diverse team consists of students from various faculties and backgrounds who come together to design, build, and race our own Formula Student car. Each team member plays a vital role, contributing not only to technical aspects like design and engineering but also to non-technical areas such as publication, finance, and sponsorship. Our success is fueled by the support of our partners, including Pertamina, whose contributions help us turn our vision into reality.

Competing in Formula Student Czech Republic 2024
Our journey to the Formula Student Czech Republic 2024 was nothing short of exhilarating. We set out with a clear goal: to design, build, and ship our race car in just 8 months. This ambitious timeline meant we had to focus on three major milestones: creating a rolling chassis, constructing a fully functional car, and preparing a fully presentable vehicle. By breaking down each phase into smaller daily targets, we kept ourselves organized and on track throughout the process.
When we finally arrived at the competition, our hard work paid off in a big way. We were thrilled to secure 3rd place in the Business Plan Presentation, 6th in Cost and Manufacturing, and an impressive 13th overall among all competing teams. As the only non-European team to achieve such rankings, our accomplishments were particularly special. Our latest car, the UIRT-02, featured cutting-edge technologies, including a lightweight carbon steel chassis and an aerodynamically optimized body made from a combination of fiberglass and carbon fiber. Powered by Pertamina’s Pertamax Turbo, we were able to maximize performance while maintaining efficiency on the track. This experience not only showcased our engineering skills but also highlighted our dedication to representing Indonesia proudly on the global stage.

With Pertamina’s support, we’re able to reach new heights, pushing the limits of what we can achieve both in terms of technology and teamwork. This experience allows us to develop crucial skills, build international connections, and represent Indonesia in one of the most exciting engineering challenges out there!
